There is a really great website that is full of wonderful information about the region, and specifically Ogijima. I want to introduce that to you today, and this article in particular:

The site is not updated as much as I would like to see, but once in awhile they create a gem. I like this article as it gives some context to what life must have been like for the residents of Ogijima. With little space, or suitable land on which to grow rice, the islanders had to make do with what they had, and to barter and trade for things they couldn’t produce themselves.
I learned something quite interesting today, and will surely see the island differently on my next visit there!
